Stephen B Vassier

THE LIFE OF STEPHEN "STEVE" BRUCE VASSIER

San Diego - Steve was born March 31, 1952, in Alton, Illinois, first-born son of Robert and Betty Vassier, and died on December 29, 2016, after a courageous ten-year battle with multiple myeloma. His loving wife and caregiver, Linda, was by his side.

Steve attended the University of Missouri at Rolla, where he met and married Linda in 1972, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and did graduate study in mathematics and operations research. Steve and Linda moved to San Diego for Steve's first job at General Dynamics in 1978 and have lived here ever since. After General Dynamics, Steve worked as a test engineer at Amex Systems, Titan Linkabit, 3Com Primary Access, Copper Mountain Networks, Tut Systems and Motorola Mobility.

Some of Steve's favorite things in life were eating good food and trying new restaurants. Steve was looking forward to eating out again after recovering from an allogeneic stem cell transplant in July, and the first place he wanted to go was Rockin' Baja Lobster in Old Town. He was a very good golfer, having played since his high school golf team, and he and his friends enjoyed playing all the great golf courses San Diego has to offer. He also played tennis and rode his bicycle. He was an avid science fiction reader and loved spending hours on his computer. He and a group of friends had season tickets for SDSU Aztec football, and they also liked to attend SDSU basketball games. Steve and Linda had Charger season tickets for many years, and they had a yearly tradition of going out to the desert for the Perseids meteor shower in August to celebrate their anniversary.

Steve is survived by his wife, Linda, parents Robert and Betty Vassier, sister, Lynne Jackson, and her husband, Randy Jackson, and their two sons, Luke and Tyler. He leaves behind many friends, co-workers and supporters who have followed his email health updates during his multiple myeloma journey.

A celebration of his life will be held in March on what would have been his 65th birthday at the place he was so looking forward to, Rockin' Baja Lobster in Old Town. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the San Diego Public Library Foundation, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Good Days. LLS and Good Days have copay assistance programs that helped fund Steve's chemotherapy drugs.

I remember Steve as the kind of classmate that you liked to be in classes with and I left AHS with good feelings about him.  I am very much saddened by his death at far too young of an age and Steve will be one of the many classmates that we have lost that I will miss seeing at the next AHS reunion.
