(11-11-2009 Update) I have been able to ascertain from the California Death Index that Carl died in San Diego, Ca. I have not found an obituary.
The obituary in the Telegraph on Thursday, Nov. 3, 1977, has Carl's Tatler photo, and it says:

"Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Carl G. Nevins Sr., 25, of 26 Calle Lo Cumbre, Camarillo, Calif., died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday [Nov. 1, 1977] in San Diego Naval Hospital, where he was admitted after a car accident three weeks ago.
"A storekeeper, he had been in the Navy for five years.
"Born in Springfield, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norris Nevins, 6016 Boyd, Godfrey; his wife, the former Janet Williamson, whom he married Oct. 8, 1972, in Godfrey; a son, Carl Jr., and a daughter, Mary Jo, both at home; and one brother, Harry E. Nevins, stationed with the Air Force in Jacksonville, Ark.
"Funeral arrangements are pending at Gent Funeral Home."
