GREGORY MITCHELL
ALTON — Gregory F. Mitchell passed from mortality into immortality at 6:20 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016, at St. Louis University Hospital. He was born June 7, 1952, in Alton, son of the late Naomi R. (Mitchell) McKamie and Elmo Campbell, Sr. Gregory received his formal education in Alton, graduating from Alton Senior High in 1970. He was employed at Mississippi Lime Co. in Alton for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Army from 1974 - 1982. Greg resided in Brooklyn, New York, until returning to Alton in 1991 to be closer to family. He then took employment as a CNA at Eldercare for several years.
Gregory was an active member of Open Door Fellowship Church in Alton, where he served in a number of capacities, including in their community food pantry. In addition to service at his church, Greg provided several years of volunteer service at the "Soup's On" Tuesday group soup kitchen, held at First Presbyterian Church in Alton.
Greg will always be remembered as a devoted neighbor and friend, and as a loving and supportive son, father, uncle, cousin, and brother.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by one daughter, Naomi Mitchell of Laurel, Maryland; two granddaughters, Patricia and Keyona Dent, and one grandson, Jordan Dent, all of Laurel, Maryland; two brothers, Stephen D. Mitchell of Alton and Terry (Annette) Campbell of Wildomar, California ; two sisters, Denise Campbell of Alton and Cynthia (Campbell) Webb of Godfrey ; two aunts, Maude Mitchell and Margaret Mitchell, both of Alton; a godson, James Watkins of Alton, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his father and mother, Greg was preceded in death by a stepfather, Walter F. McKamie, Jr.; and one brother, Elmo Campbell, Jr.
Visitation will be from 5 until time of service at 7 p.m. Friday April 8, 2016, at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Pastor Paul Maggos will be eulogist.
Burial will take place at Upper Alton Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 11.
